This year for the first time, attendees at the Genitourinary (GU) Cancers Symposium had the opportunity to participate in a Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Self-Assessment Activity while attending the Symposium. The activity was designed for attendees who wanted to refresh their knowledge, update their skills, earn points toward American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) or American Board of Surgeons requirements, or prepare for their board MOC exam. ABIM Diplomates could earn 10 MOC credits by registering for and taking an online pretest, attending sessions to fill knowledge gaps, and successfully completing an online posttest.
Elizabeth Guancial, MD, an assistant professor at the University of Rochester Medical Center, participated in the MOC Self-Assessment Activity at the 2015 GU Cancers Symposium. Below, Dr. Guancial discusses her experiences and takeaways from participating in the program.
Daily News: Why did you choose to participate in the MOC Self-Assessment Activity at the 2015 GU Cancers Symposium?
Dr. Guancial: As a GU medical oncologist who cares for patients, this seemed like the most relevant MOC self-assessment activity for my clinical practice.
Daily News: In what ways did you find that attending the recommended sessions helped address the areas of educational need that the pretest identified?
Dr. Guancial: Although none of the recommended sessions I attended explicitly discussed the corresponding MOC questions, they did review all of the necessary information or data needed to understand the context of the questions and select the correct answer.
Daily News: What were some of the largest takeaways from your participation in the program?
Dr. Guancial: This program highlighted recent scientific and clinical advances in GU tumors that members of the field should be aware of, especially paradigm changes in clinical care. This activity provided an opportunity to enhance my experience at the Symposium by actively engaging in the material presented during the recommended sessions. The pretest helped identify not to be missed sessions based on my knowledge gaps.
